Boerboels for Adoption

The Boerboel Rescue page was created to help Boerboels in need. If you are interested in considering adoption of a Boerboel or Boerboel mix, visit the links on the right side of the page under Boerboels Currently Available.  This will give you a list of what is available, along with the pertinent information about each dog.  If the dog is still available, there will be a Contact Form that you can complete.  If you fill out the Contact Form, someone will get back to you as quickly as we are able.  Keep in mind that we are volunteers, so please be patient.  We are not a Rescue.  This is a networking site to help adopters find dogs that are looking for new homes.

Another resource for Boerboels that need help is on Facebook.  You can visit this page on Facebook at Boerboel Rescue USA.

Thank you for visiting this site, and thank you for your kindness towards dogs of all breeds, especially in their time of need.

This is a photo of my two Boerboels.  The breed is very active, and do not fit the stereotype of lazy mastiffs!  Note they are 5 and 7 years old in this photo.  If you have the time to work with them and have some room for them to romp, they are a wonderful breed.  Thank you for considering adoption!

I am trying to inquire about possibly adopting Addy. I live in Austin Texas. I have on to Boerboels and was most likely the first person in Texas to ever own one. That goes back 20 years. My first dog was out of Akira kennels and my second Boerboel was at a Marvell kennels. Both of them were utterly amazing. I miss them tremendously. I currently have a male German Shepherd, who is one year old. So I am looking for a female that would be compatible with the male dog as my dog would be excepting of another dog but I do prefer opposite sex. Please call me. I’m interested in adopting a dog. Please email me and I will send you my phone
    Number. Thanks .

      Hi Ed,
My name is Abby. My family and I are located in Cedar Park, so we’re actually neighbors. I’ve been in contact with Sharon about re-homing our 1 1/2-year-old Boerboel, George. He turns two on October 8th, and he’s been with us since he was 8 weeks old. He came from a Sire & Dam from Liberty Hill and I have Dam’s papers from Bulgaria. We love him dearly and this decision is the hardest thing we’ve ever had to do. The reason we’re looking to re-home him is that he needs more work, stimulation & training than we’re able to provide him. We want the best for him, to live his life to the fullest. He loves being around other dogs. If you’d like to talk with me about George, my number is (512) 656-6640. Call anytime. Thank you, Ed.
      Best Regards,
      Abby

I am so happy I found this site!! As I’m watching this breed grow in popularity I know that there are going to be so many of these dogs in Rescue because people have no idea what they’re getting into. While I am not at this time ready for a Boerboel because I already have a dog aggressive dog there will be a time that I want an adult and I would much rather Rescue especially with my experience with aggressive dogs then pay thousands for a puppy.
Thank you for the work your doing!

We have a 14 month for a bull mastiff mix and she turned aggressive to the family and attacked our small dog three times. We need to rehome her. We failed as strict obedience owners and now are paying the price. We have a lovely couple that might be interested but the training here for aggression is about $3000 and I’m not sure if they can handle that fee. This is my last hope because we are confident we are not able to handle her.

I live between Cleveland and Erie Pa. I have a 6 1/2 yrs old Female BB that we imported from SA in 2012.
She is spayed and excellent temperament. She lost 3 playmates within 5 months of each other is very lonely for play. All were my elderly Airedales. May I ask why you need to place your baby girl?

      Hi Jamie,
I just received a basic email post from BB Rescue and saw your post. I have NO CLUE as to why their site seems like it hasn’t been updated for about a year.. Can I ask what state you are located in? I have a 6yr. old female BB that we imported from SA as a puppy and she is the LOVE of my life. I am looking for a companion for her because due to age I lost 3 dogs in less than 5 months last year. It’s been devastating for both myself and Abby, my Boerboel.
I’ve been looking for a female to adopt only because most males are so much larger and stronger and I need to make sure I can handle a male. May I ask why you are trying to re-home your boy?
Is he house broken and does not destroy things if left alone with out being supervised?
Thank You and hope to hear back from you.

Hello. We are former BB owners. We have experience with BB’s and other large dominant breeds. We’ve worked with professional dog behavorists and dog trainers. We are an active family with 4 children. We began researching the breed a few years before making a major life change from the city to the country. We knew we needed a guard dog that could also truly be an indoor family companion. We have been taken by their intelligence, loyalty and beauty. We have a nice sized property with plenty of room for large dogs to romp. We are interested in adopting at least one BB but we have room in our hearts and space in our lives and a place suited for more. We are currently replenishing an old family farm. Currently we just have handful chickens and guinea hens. We’d ove nothing more than to have 2 or 3 BB’s active with us as we rebuild.

      Hi Jejchelle,

Thank you for your interest in rescuing a Boerboel. Many of the dogs we list are owner surrenders. At the bottom of each dog’s listing will be a Contact Form. If there are any dogs that you are interested in, just complete the Contact Form and an e-mail will be sent to me and the owner of that specific dog. Check back often as we are always posting new dogs that need homes.

We also list courtesy cross posts of some Boerboels that are either in a shelter or with a Rescue. On those ones, the contact information will be at the bottom of the listing. Just contact the shelter or Rescue and let them know you are interested.

      Thanks again for considering adoption!

I have a female boerboel that has been fixed. She will be 2yrs old on July 31st of this year. She was working as one of my service dogs but has become way to protective of me. She has bite one nephew n neice of mine. Luckily they werent hurt. It could have been very bad. Both instances the kids came running towards me unexpectedly and Omaha sprung into action. I just recently had her go through a board n train. But when it comes to close quarters she is all about protection. I dont want to put her down or give her up. I just dont know what to do. Thought about a rescue or finding someone where she would be only dog, no kids type family. Really feel as though i have failed her and struggling with if i give her another chance it could be very bad if she bites another person.

I am a vet struggling physically and psychologically and between her n peyton male presa canario they have done wonders for me. I swore to them i would always be just as loyal to them as they have been to me. Am I giving up to easily?

Thank you for responding. They removed him from the CACC Transfer Team website, which is ran by volunteers at the Chicago Animal Control. He was in their “available for rescue ” album when they suddenly removed him from the album and also from the petharbor stray or lost dog search site. Usually when pets are removed from petharbor, it means they were put down, but not necessarily. I heard he may still be at the facility, but may have been moved to another section, and is no longer available for rescue. I think the only way for someone missing a Boerboel to find out for sure, would be to go for one of their missing dog tours. he was an unaltered male with a black mask. I have a picture of him that I can submit.

Thank you for responding. I wrote a response on the website and here’s the only picture I have of the male Boerboel at the Chicago Animal Control. They removed his link and information from petharbor but someone told me he may still be at the facility, but no longer available for rescue. Sadly, CACC is a high kill shelter. I just hope he is still alive. I can always request information through FOIA. The facility also has lost pet tours so this could be another way to see if he is still there. He was unaltered and had a black mask. He was very beautiful.

Hi, I volunteer with a rescue group in San Diego, CA, and we recently rescued what we thought was a Bull Mastiff mix. Turns out Ari is a petite 1-2 year old female Boerboel, very petite at 65 lbs…she might be under one year as her paws are quite large and she is very puppyish in her play/behavior. She is currently in a foster home with a male pit/lab mix and they get along great. After reading about the breed, we would love for her to go to a breed savvy family. Ari is house trained, crate trained, good with other friendly dogs, but true to the breed, can be suspicious of strangers. We had her work with a trainer/behaviorist, and she is super smart and looks for direction from a confident person. She’s a gorgeous fawn girl and very silly and sweet . Thanks, alisa

I found a Male Boerboel on Craigslist and went to look at him, as I look Mastiff breeds. When I got there he was cabled to a tree and part of the cable was wrapped several times around his leg. I took the cable off and noticed he had chunks out of his hide. To make matters worse the left white of his eye was completely bloody. All the meanwhile there was a hug pitbull on a chain going absolutely nuts, growling, barking and spit flying.
I was told he was 7 months old and had never been given a name or lived outside of a crate for any length of time. I was furious at this point and asked how much they wanted, I paid them as quick as I could, sick to my stomach the entire time. I then loaded him in the car, left and did not look back. He is very scared, traumatized and does not have any socialization. I don’t think I have the time and skill to help him, but I absolutely could not leave him there. If anyone can help or know of a place that can, please let me know. Some people should never have animals of any type.

    Thank you in advance,

    Hello,

I have a South African Mastiff (Boerboel) who is about to turn 6 years old named Bruno. He weighs about 130 pounds. I have had him since he was three months and got him from a breeder in South Africa. I love everything about the breed but I think he has become too much to handle for me and my family. When we first got him, my wife became pregnant with my first child. It was something unexpected and was really bad timing. He was very difficult to train since I didn’t have that much time. Lately, his behavior has been getting worse and he’s becoming very destructive. He is also very aggressive towards everyone who is not part of the family which is something that worries me. I have my own cleaning company and have been really busy with it the last two years. Right now it is especially busy because I am trying to expand the company and I’ve been working 12 hour shifts. I wanted to reach out to you guys to see if there was anything that I could do about Bruno. I know he is too much for me to handle and I don’t have enough time to take care of him. I searched some pet rescue centers here in San Diego (which is where I live) and this was one of the ones that stood out. I have thought about taking him to the pound but I wanted to see if there was any other alternative. Please let me know if you guys or if you know any other pet rescue centers that would be willing to take a South African Mastiff.

Hello and thanks for the wonderful things you do to help Boerboel’s in need. I have a 3.5 year old Boerboel named Atticus who is a magnificent looking Boerboel. He is 140 pounds, very muscular and we’ll proportioned. I feel very guilty that I do not have the proper time for him that he needs. I was recently laid off from my job and my new job requires me to work 6 days a week. Atticus needs more attention then I a able to give him. He is very protective of his family and when I am gone tends to be even more protective. I have a wife and 2 children that he does not obey when someone is at the door. He is very dominant and thinks he is in charge when I am away. Atticus is very playful and loyal but requires and strong owner who will be consistent with him. I am heart broken that I am even writing this but I need to find “Atti” a home that is better suited for him. I believe he would do best in a home with a large property and alot of attention. He could possibly live with other larger sturdy female dogs. He has a prey drive so would not be good with small dogs that run away or cats. He is leash trained however gets more protective on leash around strangers and dogs. He needs a large space to call his own. Atticus wants nothing more then to protect his territory, play fetch, be loved on, seriously loved on, I mean it’s pretty crazy how much he enjoys being petted, rubbed, scratched, and cuddled. He is just a great dog for the right home. I am willing to hold onto Atticus for as long as it takes to find him the proper environment to suit his needs. I love him dearly and want the best for him. Please let me know what my next steps are to start the process. Thank you

I asked around to some breeders and owners of Boerboels. Some people said that vets will tattoo a dog when it is neutered or spayed. Some tattoos have been a line or an S meaning spayed. Apparently there is a shelter in TX that tattoos females with a pink line indicating spayed. A shelter in NJ neutered a male Boerboel and tattooed a blue line next to his man parts.

Could your girl’s tattoo be an indicator of a spay? So far, no one has known any breeders that have tattooed their dogs. If you want to e-mail photos privately, you can send them to info @ shopforpuppy.com. I would be interested in seeing pictures of your girl.

Rebecca thank you for your thoughtful response. Bill and I would very much like to speak further with you about Max. The cursory indicators you’ve mentioned are very positive. We do realize that comfortable co-habitation with other animals are subject to the abilities of a responsible owner, and these learning potentialities may only be realized through a long term curve of proper development. I will wait to hear from you regarding this prospect at your leisure. We will accommodate all requests for site photographs of our home, barns, garage, and grounds. We will also accommodate your wish to visit us at any time subject to appointment. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

    Good morning,

I am inquiring regarding some of the posts for boerboels needing forever homes. We lost ours about a month ago and he was the best dog we could have ever imagined. The breed is spectacular.

A little bit about us. We have a house with a large yard on Long Island, NY. Both me and my husband work opposite shifts so someone is always home. We have 2 children ages 3 & 5 both very accustomed to their large sizes.

We are looking for our next buddy and family member and willing to only adopt not purchase from a breeder. Please contact me so we can discuss any available dogs who will be perfect for both of us.

    Thank you!
    Michelle

  44. There is a Boerboel in the Liberty Humance Society in Jersey City. He needs to get out of there quickly. Is there any way you can contact them and see if you can help? Please…

I am in WI. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be able to get all the way there to help him at this time. I’m truly sorry! If there is a pup in need closer to our area, I am still available.
      Good luck!!

My family and I were interested in fostering or adopting a boerboel in need. We live in WI; however, there is not a rescue in this area for the breed. I was curious whether you place dogs in the vicinity or are willing to?
We are homeowners. We do not have small children. No cats and one dog (puppy). He is scheduled to be neutered in November as we do not breed.
Please let me know if you have a contact in the Midwest or if you foster/adopt in this region.
    Thank you,
    Jamie

      Hi Jamie,

Right now there are no Boerboel Rescues in each state, although sometimes there are dogs in WI and the Midwest. We can place dogs in your vicinity. You can check on this blog as I occasionally post dogs that are up for adoption. You might also want to check the Boerboel Rescue Facebook page. If necessary, we can also try to arrange transportation for a dog.

If you see any particular dogs that you think you might have an interest in, just let me know and I will be able to give you additional information about the dog.
